Where Did Blackjack Originate?
One of the most popular casino card games, Blackjack boasts a rich history, tracing its origins to 17th-century France. It was initially known as 'Vingt-et-Un', French for 21. This version was highly favored by the French nobility under King Louis XV.
From France, the game spread to North America, carried by French colonists. In America, the game underwent several adaptations and eventually received its well-known name, referring to a special bonus payout given for a hand featuring an Ace of Spades and a Black Jack (a Jack of Clubs or Spades). Over the years, this popular card game has evolved into the game we know today, celebrated for its simple Online Blackjack rules and its potential for strategic depth, making it a favorite for both beginners and experienced players engaging in online casino gambling.
How Does Online Blackjack Work? Rules Explained
The Blackjack rules are simple to learn. The main goal is to beat the dealer. How many points do you need? By achieving a hand value closer to 21 than the dealer's, without exceeding 21 (going 'bust'). When you achieve 21 points with your first two cards (a Blackjack), you win automatically (unless the dealer also has Blackjack).
- Card Values Overview: Face cards (Jack, Queen, King) are each worth 10 points. The Ace is your wild card, valued as either 1 or 11. All other cards are worth their face value.
Each round begins with the first two cards dealt to every player and the dealer. You see both of your cards, but only one of the dealer’s. Based on the value of your initial hand, the player can choose to draw more cards ('Hit'), stand pat ('Stand'), double the original wager ('Double Down'), or split Blackjack cards if you have a pair. If the player's hand value exceeds 21, the player loses automatically.
The charm of Blackjack lies in its clear rules. Played with a standard deck (or sometimes multiple decks!), the goal is simple: beat the dealer by getting closer to 21 without busting.
Understanding Insurance
Insurance is an option available when the dealer's visible card is an Ace. Insurance involves placing an additional side bet, typically half of your original wager, on the insurance line.
- If the dealer then has Blackjack, your insurance bet is paid out 2 to 1, which compensates for the loss of your original bet.
- If the dealer does not have Blackjack, the insurance bet is lost.
If a player has Blackjack and the dealer shows an Ace, the player is often offered the option of taking 'Even Money' (a 1-to-1 payout instead of 1.5-to-1) to avoid the risk of a push (stand-off) if the dealer also hits Blackjack.
The Best Blackjack Strategies
How to win at Blackjack? Below you will find some of the most effective strategies you can use. Remember, it is not a guarantee of success; it remains a game of chance.
The Basic Strategy, Blackjack strategy
The Basic Strategy is a mathematically optimized approach that tells all players the best possible action (Hit, Stand, Double Down, Split) based on their cards and the dealer's face-up card. The best Blackjack strategy significantly reduces the house edge and maximizes your chances of winning.
- When to Stand: Generally, if you have a total of 17 points or higher, you should stand. Standing is also usually the best choice with a "soft" 18 or higher (a hand with an Ace counted as 11).
- When to Hit: If you have a total of 11 or less, you should always take an extra card. With a "soft" 17 or lower (hand with an Ace), it is often wise to hit.
- Double Down: Doubling down on a total of 10 or 11 can be very profitable. This gives you the chance to double your winnings if you have a strong hand.
- When to Split: Splitting at Blackjack is simple: Always split pairs of Aces and Eights. Avoid splitting Tens and Fives.
Card Counting
After a game is played, the cards are often not reshuffled immediately but continue from the remaining cards in the shoe. This can be an advantage for the player: by paying close attention to which cards have been used, they can estimate which cards remain. Such a player is called a card counter.
Card counting works by assigning groups of cards a value: low cards (2-6), neutral cards (7-9), and high cards (10-Ace). Every time a card is played, you adjust the 'count': +1 for low cards, 0 for neutral, and -1 for high cards. This system, devised by Edward O. Thorp, helps track the likelihood of a high or low card being drawn next.
It is advantageous for the player when many small cards are drawn (resulting in a high count). If a disproportionate number of high cards remain in the cards yet to be played, the players' chances increase. The house must hit on totals below 17, which increases the chance of the dealer going bust. Players are allowed to stand in that situation.
Card counters can recognize these situations and will bet high when they occur. They may also deviate from the Basic Strategy when the count is favorable. However, today, Blackjack is often played with multiple decks, which significantly reduces the advantage of card counting.

A wildly popular card game where you play directly against the dealer. First you get 2 open cards while the dealer will start the game with 1 closed and 1 open card. To get as close as possible to 21 you can get new cards by 'hitting'. Of course you can also always stand.
If at the end you have more than the dealer AND you do not have more than 21. Then you win! If you manage to reach 21 then you will get your bet 1.5x on top of your initial bet!
You need all cards from a normal deck. The numbers have their respective value, with the face up card, the "pictures" are worth 10 points and when you draw an Ace you have the choice between 1 or 11 points.
